Presenting “Forest Throne”

Mon. Mar, 2009 by Amy

Well, the chair is transformed. I feel so proud that I finished it, and it looks pretty good. (Looks better in person than in my photos actually).

I learned so much during the project. Here are the lessons learned:

First of all, be flexible. When the first idea didn’t work out, the new plan morphed and changed up to the final moment. At times I felt like I was in Project Runway for chair designers as I wandered around garden stores trying to get ideas.

That hot glue guns are a wondrous (and dangerous) invention. About 150 mini glue sticks were used to hold this together- about 25% of which burned my fingers.

That it is fun and satisfying to create something with your hands that is outside the normal design work.

That individually gluing rocks and sticks on a chair is extremely time consuming, and that it is not that easy to glue moss to anything. I hope it gets a high bid at the auction considering time spent!

That cats are fascinated by a moss-covered chair in a frightening way. Fortunately they did not decide to claim ownership. That would have been the final straw.

And finally, sometimes you just have to say something is good enough. Grand ideas of creating bird sculptures and hand painting objects had to be moderated with the fact that I had to complete this in a weekend.

I’ll probably write a final update when the auction concludes end of April. It will be shown at First Friday at some location tbd for the next 30 days or so.
